6-month jeepney traffic experiment starts March

ILOILO City – The Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO) of the city government will start a six-month traffic experiment at the Iloilo Business Park in Mandurriao district next month.

Due to the growing volume of passengers going to the Iloilo Business Park, four groups of city-bound jeepneys will be allowed to service the area – Pavia Highway, SM City Proper, Oton-Anhawan, and Leganes Highway.

At present, only the following jeepneys serve the Iloilo Business Park: Mandurriao- SM City, San Miguel and Alimodian (Iloilo).

According to PSTMO chief Jeck Conlu, the foot traffic at the Iloilo Business Club is growing.

“May ara kita dira mga 20,000 to 25,000 employees of call centers. Ang projection is malab-ot pa sa 30,000,” said Conlu.

These are on top of those working in various mall stores, hotels and restaurants, and condominium residents, said Conlu.

This volume of passengers has actually attracted tricycles which are banned from national roads and highways, he added.

“After the traffic experimentation, we will conduct an assessment. We will see if the number of jeepneys is already enough or viable or kon ang aton gin extend nga rota na-serve ang purpose,” Conlu said./PN
