ILOILO City – This year’s Lent had the most number of drowning incidents in recent memory, according to the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO).
The police recorded six casualties, two of whom were minors, according to Chief Inspector Aron Palomo, spokesperson of the provincial police.
Last year, the IPPO recorded only three cases during Holy Week.
On Good Friday (April 14), four separately drowned in Passi City, Pototan and Dueñas towns while there were two on Maundy Thursday (April 13).
The 50-year-old Efren Panes of Barangay Tubod, Passi City was swallowed by the Lamunan River in Barangay Buenavista, Passi City around 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
Three hours after, the body of 25-year-old Alexis Balgus of Barangay Tumcon Ilaud, Pototan was found floating in a river.
Also in Pototan, Grade 5 pupil Christian Puig, 11, was fished out of the river in Barangay Dapitan already lifeless.
Earlier that morning Puig and some cousins played and swam in the river but he failed to return home. Family and relatives started looking for him.
Meanwhile, six-year-old Christian Dave Dabuco was found dead in a fishpond near their house in Barangay Anjawan, Dueñas.
Family members didn’t notice that he went out of the house and played at the fishpond, police said.
On Thursday, 30-year-old Jun-jun Andilecio drowned at Tabucon River in Calinog. He was a resident of Barangay Libot.
On the other hand, 52-year-old Joselito Magallon of Barangay Pasil, New Lucena drowned at the Katunggan Park in Sitio Gege, Barangay Nabitasan, Leganes.
Katunggan Park is river with lots of mangroves growing.
Magallon was with family and relatives but it was too late when they noticed he had disappeared. It took them some time to find his body.
According to Chief Inspector Palomo, the adults who drowned were probably drunk or didn’t know how to swim./PN
