BACOLOD City – Clinoptilolite larvicide, also known as “kitikitix”, were distributed to 61 barangays to combat dengue.
To kill the eggs of dengue-carrying mosquitoes, the larvicide must be applied to stagnant water where dengue mosquitoes breed, said Dr. Ma. Carmela Gensoli, chief of the City Health Office (CHO).
The larvicide blocks oxygen in the water, thus exterminating mosquito eggs, she explained.
Gensoli assisted Mayor Evelio Leonardia and CHO-Environmental Sanitation Division head Dr. Grace Tan in distributing the larvicide to the officials of 61 barangays at the Bacolod Government Center.
Dmall barangays each received two bags of larvicide while the big ones were given three bags each.
The CHO purchased a total of 700 bags of larvicide for its anti-dengue program.
Before the distribution, Tan discussed with barangay officials ways how to prevent and treat dengue.
The CHO staff also demonstrated how to use the larvicide.
Leonardia, on the other hand, appealed for the people’s cooperation in the fight against dengue.
In August, the CHO said the dengue situation in this city had reached the “alert level”, citing an 83-percent increase in cases from January to Aug. 16 this year compared to the number of cases in the same period in 2015.
CHO reactivated “fast lanes” in all barangay health centers to accommodate patients with fever, one of the symptoms of dengue.
Other symptoms are headache, pain behind eyes, severe joint and muscle pain, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and skin rashes./PN
