ILOILO City – Sixty-one additional senior high school buildings will be put up in Western Visayas, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The government is shelling out around P869 million for these new projects, according to Assistant Regional Director Jose Al Fruto.
Fruto described the additional school buildings as “critical.”
“Bag-o lang ini nga mga projects ginpa-bid sang DPWH,” he said. “Nag-require ini sang additional funding tungod sa mga technical requirements for the foundation.”
In February Fruto lamented that the required soil exploration before each school building’s construction was straining their budget and contributed to the delay in the completion of the projects.
Yesterday he told Panay News the DPWH will get the funding for the additional classroom buildings from the Basic Education Facilities Fund of the Department of Education.
“Dapat umpisahan na ini [ang new projects],” Fruto stressed.
He also believes all senior high school buildings currently under construction will be completed within the year.
Meanwhile the Iloilo City District Engineering Office assured that all senior high school buildings being built under its supervision will be ready within the month.
Eleven of its 15 “target projects” have been completed. Two will be finished in time for the opening of classes tomorrow, while the remaining two will be fully usable by month’s end, District Engineer Rodney Gustilo.
The 11 completed projects comprised 81 classrooms.
They included 16 classrooms at Ramon Avanceña National High School and eight in its Yulo Drive extension school.
Iloilo National High School, Fort San Pedro National High School, Iloilo City National High School, Jalandoni Memorial National High School, RJ Hechanova Memorial National High School, Jaro National High School, and Mandurriao National High School had eight classrooms each.
Baluarte Elementary School had three classrooms, while two were at the TCT-AR Foundation Integrated School.
Eight classrooms being built at La Paz National High School and another eight at Yusay Memorial National High School will be usable by Monday.
The first and second floors of the 15-classroom school building at La Paz National High School were ready, but the third and the last floor will be usable by end of the month.
Another eight classrooms being built at the Iloilo National High School will be ready around the same time, Gustilo said.
Ten public schools in this city offered senior high school last year. They had 2,529 enrollees, Department of Education data showed.
