650 free computers for 65 high schools in Western Visayas

ILOILO City – A total of 650 desktop computers will be given to 65 public high schools in Western Visayas under the largest computerization project for the basic education sector in the country.

Each school will get 10 personal computers and printers under the Personal Computer for Public School Phase 5 (PCPS-5) project.

The PCPS-5 has a P196-million budget from the Government of Japan’s No-Project Grant Assistance for 380 public high schools in Mindanao and Visayas.

The Department of Trade and Industry is managing the project in partnership with the Department of Education.

The computers are expected to be delivered to the recipient schools before the end of the year, DTI Region 6 information officer David Israel Sinay said Tuesday.

The PCPS-5 seeks to replace the “obsolete computer packages in schools affected by typhoons or earthquakes,” he said.

In addition the project aims to “upgrade computer laboratories to support the implementation of the K-12 curriculum,” he added.

Recipients in Western Visayas include 28 schools in Aklan, eight in Antique, 25 in Iloilo, and two each in Negros Occidental and Capiz.

The DTI Region 6 has gathered representatives from the recipient schools and coordinators for an orientation in this city. “They were told about the purpose of the program and how it is implemented,” said Sinay.

The project’s first four phases carried out from 2001 to 2014 saw the delivery of 61,554 computers to 5,028 public schools, DTI Resource Generation and Management Service chief Zenaida F. Pre said during the orientation. (PNA)
