ILOILO City – Fines will be exacted from 67 drivers who violated the city’s speed limit ordinance during the local law’s first day of implementation.
In the morning of June 1, the Transportation Management and Traffic Regulation Office (TMTRO) apprehended 35 violators. By 5 p.m., the number rose to 67.
Most of the culprits were drivers of private vehicles, said TMTRO chief Robert Foerster.
Traffic enforcers also caught drivers of passenger jeepneys, motorcycles, taxis, and trucks.
The penalties for violating Regulation Ordinance No. 2015-283 are as follows:
* P200 fine and/or imprisonment of one day minimum to two months maximum on first offense
* P500 fine and/or two months and one day minimum to four months maximum in prison on second offense
* P1,000 fine and/or imprisonment of four months and one day minimum to six months maximum for third and subsequent violations.
The speed limits, however, are not applicable during emergencies and law enforcement operations.
All the violators were caught on Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue (Diversion Road) where TMTRO and the Iloilo City Police Office focused on the first day of the ordinance’s enforcement.
The avenue is one of the busiest in the city and where many road accidents have taken place.
According to Foerster, his men had not encountered difficulty enforcing the ordinance.
“Those apprehended had lots of alibis such as not knowing there is such an ordinance limiting the speed of motor vehicles,” said Foerster./PN
