ILOILO City – Seven police officers in the province of Iloilo were cited for their immediate arrest of three abduction, carnapping and rape suspects.
The following were awarded with the Philippine National Police merit medals:
* Chief Inspector Charlie Sustento Jr., chief of the Provincial Special Operations Group
* Senior Police Officer 2 Bobby Gayagoy Jr.
* Senior Police Officer 2 Recie Espinosa
* Police Officer 3 Nelios Anico
* Police Officer 3 Rhys Villaruel
* Police Officer 1 Bernard Tanoy, and
* Police Officer 1 John Cesar Banrique.
According to Chief Superintendent Jose Gentiles, regional police director, these police officers acted quickly to arrest the suspects and rescue the victims.
On March 6, a couple was abducted at the parking area of a mall in Barangay San Rafael, Mandurriao district, and their sport utility vehicle stolen while the city was supposedly under tight security due to the ongoing meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The victims were call center agents – Marc Ymel Jocson, 22, of La Paz district and his 24-year-old girlfriend from Barangay Hibao-an, Mandurriao.
The abduction was carried out around 6:30 p.m. just a few blocks away from the Iloilo Convention Center, venue of the ASEAN meetings.
A former seafarer with a pending rape charge, the 22-year-old Sirius Jim Villareal, was arrested hours after in Barangay Puerto Princesa, Barotac Viejo, Iloilo. His companion, 22-year-old security guard Reymund Cordero, was arrested, too.
A third suspect, Robert Tingson, was caught on March 7 in Barangay Serallo, Anilao town.
Jocson and his girlfriend had just boarded a Ford Everest at the parking area of the mall when the three men threatened them with a gun and hauled them to the backseat, police said.
Villareal, a resident of Barangay 7, Tigbauan, Iloilo, was wanted for the alleged rape of two women in 2015./PN
