8 Iloilo towns have no more active COVID cases

ILOILO – This province is continuing its fight against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with eight towns having no more active cases of the viral illness.

The Provincial Health Office’s (PHO) Jan. 1 data identified these towns as Concepcion, Lemery, Carles, Banate, Maasin, Batad, Badiangan, and Bingawan.

As of Friday, PHO recorded a total of 313 active cases, which is 10 percent of the 3,073 total confirmed infections.

Other towns with only one active COVID-19 case were San Rafael, Mina, Anilao, Balasan, Estancia, Dueñas, New Lucena, San Joaquin, and Leganes.

As to the clinical status of the active cases, 205 were asymptomatic, 57 were mild and 51 were severe.

So far, 2,664 Ilonggos have completely recuperated from the viral illness.

The death toll, on the other hand, stood at 95.

Meanwhile, areas having the most number of active cases were Oton (47), Guimbal (39), Pavia (38), Passi City (34), and Santa Barbara (34).

Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon, PHO head, said the key to stopping or at least slowing down the spread of coronavirus is to practice the “3M strategy” (Mag Maskara, Mag Distancia kag Manghinaw).

She urged the public to avoid attending public gatherings like holiday merrymakings, birthdays, wakes and burials, among others, that could lead to more COVID-19 infections.

People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus. The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales.

These droplets also land on objects and surfaces around the person. Other people then catch COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth.

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, and dry cough.

Some patients may have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea. These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. Some people become infected but don’t develop any symptoms and don’t feel unwell./PN
