8 of 10 firstborns in Aklan illegitimate

KALIBO, Aklan – There are a total of 4,478 firstborn children in Aklan last year, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

Of the total number, 3,475 – or 78 percent – were illegitimate. The 22 percent, or 1,003, were all legitimate.

Illegitimate children are those who were conceived and born to parents out of wedlock.

This capital town posted the highest number of illegitimate firstborn kids with 2,041, followed by Ibajay with 319 and Malay with 266.

PSA records further showed that 51 percent, or 2,290, of last year’s firstborn children were male while 49 percent, or 2,188, were female.

Majority of the eldest kids were born to mothers aged 20 years old (8 percent or 438) and fathers aged 22 years old (7 percent or 327).

Aklan’s firstborn children were mostly born in hospitals (74 percent or 3,336) while those born at home account for 24 percent, or 1,090 of the total number.

The PSA also recorded that the province’s firstborn kids were born mostly with the help of physicians (69 percent or 3,082), followed by hilots (22 percent or 971), midwives (6 percent or 338), and nurses (less than 23 percent).
