India GM Santosh Gujrathi Vidit maintained his half-point after a tough draw against Andrey Esipenko of Russia in Round 4 of the 84th Tata Steel Chess Tournament now ongoing at Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands.
Vidit pressed Esipenko at the outset of a Giuoco Piano game, but had to relent later and settle for the draw after 32 moves. There were two decisive games of the round. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov managed o turn a losing game into victory against Jan-Krzysztof Duda when the latter’s time trouble played a crucial factor in producing less than ideal moves in the sharp Semi-Tarrasch Game they were playing. Duda gave up after 41 moves. Meanwhile, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa took advantage of an off-form Nils Grandelius to hack out a win in 64 moves of a Gruenfeld Defense.
The other games were drawn. Top seed Magnus Carlsen was held by Jorden Van Foreest who played in a rather adventurous manner to earn the draw after 52 moves of another Gruenfeld. Fabiano Caruana and Daniil Dubov was drawn after 38 moves of a Ruy Lopez Closed, while Sergey Karjakin vs Anish Giri and Sam Shankland vs Richard Rapport were short grandmaster draws that ended in 14 and 21 moves, respectively.
The standings after Round 4: 1. Vidit, 3; 2-6. Esipenko, Carlsen, Mamedyarov, Rapport, Van Foreest, 2½; 7-9. Duda, Caruana, Praggnanandhaa, 2; 10-13. Giri, Dubov, Karjakin, Shankland, 1½; 14. Grandelius, ½.
