ILOILO City – The National Nutrition Council (NNC) in Region 6 released P19.4 million worth of checks to nine local government units (LGUs) to fund their “Early Childhood Care and Development Intervention Package” (ECCD-IP).

Recipient LGUs were Concepcion, Pototan, Tigbauan and Passi City from Iloilo province and Binalbagan, Hinoba-an, Cadiz City, San Carlos City and La Carlota City from Negros Occidental.

NNC regional program coordinator Nona Tad-y said these LGUs were included in the Accelerated and Sustainable Program (ASAPP) areas as determined by the Cabinet Cluster on Human Development and Poverty Reduction.

Tad-y said ECCD focuses on the first 1,000 days of babies, recognized as the “golden window of opportunity” for nutrition and related interventions to have a positive impact on the physical and mental development of children.

“The program aims to contribute to the full development of the child through the provision of integrated services of health, nutrition, early education and social services for the improvement of the quality of life of our children as contribution to reduce poverty,” said Tad-y.

Interventions are specifically geared towards the improvement of the nutrition status of children by reducing stunting, wasting and mortality and morbidity rates among children through better IYCF practices along exclusive breastfeeding and complementary feeding of young children.

Some of the interventions are:

  • mothers’ classes

  • home food production

  • close monitoring of height and weight of children using weighing scales and steel rulers distributed by NNC

The ECCD will be implemented in the ASAPP areas for three years – from 2016 to 2018.

Tad-y said the LGUs already finished the social preparation activities for the implementation of the ECCD.

Some have already started their mothers’ classes and home food production activities. (PIA-Iloilo/PN)
