THE CITY of Passi celebrates this year its 19th cityhood anniversary with an array of sports and cultural activities highlighted by its colorful festival, Pintados de Pasi.
This year’s festival theme is “Working Together…as a Community…as a Nation!”
Passi City’s Mayor Jesry T. Palmares, who pushed for the elevation of the then municipality’s status to cityhood, announced the opening celebration on March 4 and invited everyone to grace the final event.
“The celebration of Passi City’s 19th foundation anniversary is a favorable event for all Passinhons both here and abroad,” said Mayor Palmares.
“We celebrate Pintados de Pasi Festival to highlight our cultural, historical and social heritage,” he added.
This year, the festival will not be having a tribes competition. Instead, the five Pintados tribes will be presenting colorful performances along with guest tribes from other municipalities.
Activities include the 3rd Pintados de Pasi Invitational Basketball Championship (March 4 to 18); the Kiddies and Open Chess Championships (March 5); opening of the Food Festival and Zumbatados (March 8); a Mass in the morning; a motorcade; Laragway, a photo exhibit; Search for Mister Passi 2017; fireworks display; and a show of the BoybandPH (March 14).
On March 15, activities held were the 1st Pintados de Pasi Boxing Championship 2017 and Paranublion, a cultural showcase of Ilonggo folk songs and dances.
Artists had their day on March 16 during the Pinta-Lawas activity at Plaza Paloma.
Yesterday, activities held were the Karosa Parada Contest at 7 a.m., the Golden Hearts Award and Handuraw: Songs and Dances of Yesteryears at Plaza Paloma.
Pintados Street Dancing will be today starting at 7 a.m., followed by the 1st Pintados de Pasi Taekwondo Championship 2017 at the Assumption School of Passi City Covered Gym.
Night with the Stars will be held tonight at 8:30 p.m. at Plaza Paloma, featuring showbiz idols Arci Muñoz, Billy Crawford and Yohan Hwang.
Pintados de Pasi Festival retraces the legend and history of Passi, the bonding of kindred spirits, and the intermingling of Aetas, Chinese, Malays, Muslims, Hindus, Spaniards, Japanese, and the Americans.
“It is the mirror of our harmony and cooperation and our appreciation of our heritage,” said Mayor Palmares.
CITY PROJECTS
In his final term as Passi City’s chief executive, among Mayor Palmares’ achievements are the improvement of the city’s market and the elevation of the town’s status to city.
Under his administration, banks and business establishments, including Gaisano City, have set up branches in Passi City. A new branch of CityMall will soon be opening in the city.
The city’s slaughterhouse had also been improved, rehabilitated and was rated first-class. More roads have been and are being constructed.
The budget for a bypass and circumferential road that aims to ease traffic in the city has already been approved and the project is being prepared for the required bidding for contractors.
As a proof of its trust in the city administration, the Philippine Red Cross has identified the City of Passi as the location of its Regional Logistics and Training Hub in Region 6. The center is currently under construction./PN
