ILOILO City – The 31-year-old laborer accused of raping a seven-year-old girl in Barangay Parara Norte, Tigbauan, Iloilo was arrested Saturday night in Barangay Cagbang, Oton town.
Village watchmen collared Noel Salarda of Barangay Parara Sur, Tigbauan around 8:30 p.m. He was hiding in a grassy area of Barangay Cagbang.
According to Chief Inspector Alejandro Apostol, Oton police chief, Salarda was behaving strangely and barangay residents became suspicious.
“He was seen walking earlier in the day. He was evasive every time he encountered people,” said Apostol.
According to the rape victim’s mother, Salarda abducted her daughter – a Grade I pupil – from their house on Friday around 11:45 p.m.
“The mother chased the suspect but he was so fast,” said Police Officer 2 Kristine Banas of the Tigbauan police station.
The mother sought help from neighbors and two hours later her daughter was seen walking naked and crying.
Neighbors recovered the girl’s underwear and pair of shorts, and the suspect’s brief in a secluded, grassy area in Barangay Parara Norte.
The police had the girl examined by a doctor. Results were yet to be released.
Barangay tanods of Cagbang took Salarda to the Oton police station. From there, he was transferred to the Tigbauan police station.
In detention, Salarda denied raping the girl but admitted undressing her in his nipa hut./PN
