ILOILO City – Policemen stopped a hazing in Pototan, Iloilo and arrested 14 college students it caught paddling five neophytes seeking to join their fraternity.

The 14 were detained at the Pototan police station on Sunday afternoon while the five were taken to the Iloilo Provincial Hospital in Barangay Rumbang, Pototan for bruises on their thighs.

According to Chief Inspector Bonifacio Alabe, Pototan police chief, the 14 students were members of Triskelion De Visayas or Tau Gamma Phi.

The hazing was held near a river bank. Alabe said concerned citizens alerted the police station around 2:20 p.m.

“We caught them with paddles. The five applicants were suffering from pain on their thighs,” said Alabe.

The police recovered three paddles inscribed with the fraternity’s name.

According to Alabe, the 14 students may be charged with violation of Republic Act 8049, the law regulating hazing and other forms of initiation rites in fraternities, sororities, and other organizations.

The law defines hazing as “an initiation rite or practice as a prerequisite for admission into membership in a fraternity, sorority or organization by placing the recruit, neophyte or applicant in some embarrassing or humiliating situations such as forcing him to do menial, silly, foolish and other similar tasks or activities or otherwise subjecting him to physical or psychological suffering or injury.”  

It also specifies the following conditions:

* No hazing or initiation rites in any form or manner is allowed without prior written notice to the school authorities or head of organization seven days before the conduct of such initiation.

* The written notice shall indicate the period of the initiation activities which shall not exceed three days, shall include the names of those to be subjected to such activities, and shall further contain an undertaking that no physical violence be employed by anybody during such initiation rites.  

* The head of the school or organization or their representatives must assign at least two representatives of the school or organization, as the case may be, to be present during the initiation.

* It is the duty of such representative to see to it that no physical harm of any kind shall be inflicted upon a recruit, neophyte or applicant, the law stressed.

Alabe said the following were taken to Pototan police station:

* Jasper Jamotillo, 21, of John B. Lacson Collages Foundation – Villa branch and a resident of Barangay  Batuan, Pototan

* Christian Cordero, 23, of Central Philippine University (CPU) and resident of San Jose Street, Pototan

* Charles Paredes, 23, of Guanco Street, Pototan

* Neil Simon, 21, of Barangay Amamaros, Pototan

* John Rey Ponce, 19, of Barangay Dawis, New Lucena

* Karl Dominic Salvilla, 23, of T. Magbanua Street, Pototan

* Angelo Pastolero, 22, of West Visayas State University – Pototan Campus and resident of Barangay Tipolo, Mina, Iloilo

* Andrew Dosado, 20, of St. Therese MTC Colleges and resident of Guanco Street, Pototan

* Ron Arlie Lao, 19, of Barangay Batuan, Pototan

* Joseph Pelobello, 24 , and Nathaniel Gregory Pendon, 23,  both of Lopez Jaena Ward, Pototan

* Mark Anthony Pusa, 21, of Ledesma Ward, Pototan

* Rigel Pertollano, 23, and Dave Fuentes, 21, both of Jardin Street, Pototan.

Meanwhile, the five students taken t the hospital were the following:

* Jones De Guzman, 18, of Barangay Cau-ayan, Pototan

* Rizalde Pagulong, 22, and Eduardo Abido, 26, both of Lopez Jaena Street, Pototan

* Edimar Precia, 18, of Barangay Cau-ayan, Pototan and

* Kyle Lester Papellera, 22, of P. Ledesma Street, Pototan.

Under Section 4 of Republic Act 8049, if the person subjected to hazing or other forms of initiation rites suffers any physical injury or dies, the officers and members of the fraternity, sorority or organization who actually participated in the infliction of physical harm shall be liable as principals. The person or persons who participated in the hazing shall suffer the penalty of life imprisonment if it results to death, rape, sodomy or mutilation./PN
