ILOILO City – This city will be hosting another Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meeting from April 24 to 29.
“This is very good for the city,” said Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
The city hosted ASEAN’s 22nd Senior Officials Meeting for ASCC (SOCA) and the 17th ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Council meeting from March 6 to 9, and the 3rd ASEAN OECD Good Regulatory Practice Network Meeting from March 14 to 15.
“We were able to provide very dedicated and satisfied services to our visitors during the ASEAN meetings,” said Mabilog.
City Tourism Officer Junel Ann Divinagracia said the April meeting will be hosted by the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC).
Over 30 delegates, including senior officials of ASEAN countries’ anti-poverty teams, will be here for almost two weeks, she revealed.
The city will host the training of trainers. Prior to this, the delegates will have a study visit in Guimaras from April 17 to 21 but they will be staying in three hotels in the metropolis.
“NAPC’s communication came as a surprise. We received it on March 16 only but this will not hinder us from providing good service to the delegates. We are glad they have chosen Iloilo City as host,” said Divinagracia.
The Iloilo Organizing Committee and National Organizing Council have already discussed the details for the hosting.
Divinagracia said the city government will also organize city tours for the delegates.
Meanwhile, during yesterday’s flag ceremony at city hall, Mabilog awarded certificates of appreciation to Jan Isleta of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Cynthia Oñate and Velma Jane Lao, both of the Iloilo provincial government, and Belen Carreon of West Visayas State University for their contribution to previous ASEAN meetings.
The Philippine government through NAPC is implementing the ASEAN regional program for capacity development to enhance accountability of local governments in delivering social protection programs through Community Driven Development (CDD).
The project is implemented under the Social Protection Regional Framework Action Plan Rural Development and Poverty Eradication (RFAP-RDPE) and is funded by the Japan-ASEAN Integrated Fund.
The project aims to create a platform for the promotion of CDD social protection programs in the ASEAN; to lay the basic requirements for the start of CDD social protection program; and to train key trainers of the participating ASEAN countries. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
