ILOILO City – A shootout during a drug operation in Barangay Tiza, Roxas City left a police officer wounded.
The 30-year-old Police Officer 2 Jorge Vinnie Marcellana of Capiz Police Provincial Office’s (CPPO) Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit (PDEU) was taken to the Roxas Memorial Provincial Hospital for a gunshot wound on his right foot.
The shootout happened around 10:45 p.m. on Monday.
The subject of the buy-bust operation, 41-year-old Manuel Roxas, was arrested but his three other companions fired shots at Marcellana and the cop’s backup, according to Senior Superintendent Samuel Nacion, Capiz police director.
Roxas sold a sachet of shabu to Marcellana for P1,000, said Nacion. However, the suspect’s three companions standing by in a red Toyota Innova (plate number FGY-979) may have sensed this was an entrapment and started firing their guns.
The wounded Marcellana and his backup, Police Officer 1 Jaspher Isidoro, were able to return fire but the vehicle quickly left.
Roxas, a resident of Hermano Subdivision, Barangay Punta Tabuc, Roxas City, was taken to the police station.
Nacion identified the two men in the Innova as Charles Lubao, 30, and Nikki Granflor.
“Our men could not immediately fire their guns because there were houses nearby,” said Nacion.
Police recovered from Roxas four more grams of shabu worth P24,000 and other illegal drugs paraphernalia, said the director./PN
