ILOILO – Most people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Western Visayas are males and in the prime of their lives, according to the Department of Health.
Cases of HIV in the region reached 451 in 2016, according to the Health department’s Region 6 office.
Western Visayas ranked sixth among all regions in the Philippines in terms of newly diagnosed cases per region, data from the Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit showed.
“In December 2016, every 19 hours, a person is diagnosed with HIV in Western Visayas,” said Christine Mosqueda, regional sexually transmitted infections nurse coordinator.
Majority of the cases are males, with 432. Females only numbered 19.
A total of 226 cases belong to the age group 25–34 years old; 134 cases, 15–24 years old; and one case, child below 15 years old, data showed.
Region 6 also accounts for 3 percent of the HIV cases in the Philippines.
Nationwide, 9,264 cases were recorded from January to December 2016.
Of the figure, 1,113 are full-blown AIDS cases, while 8,151 are asymptomatic.
HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, causes AIDS, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome. (PIA/PN)
