I ADMIRE the President in his passion to better the Philippines. Like a father concerned of his children, he does not want them to lead a life of useless waifs of society. I could feel when the President almost growled declaring his disdain on illegal drugs.
I doubly admire him. No one from among his predecessor presidents dared naming in public the untouchables such as the elite in the military, in the business world, in mining, in politics. The President has stood as a maverick, daring to step on different paths, speaks the unspeakable and challenges the formidable, powerful countries of the world. I see the game of realpolitik in him, the politics of reality.
Far from being theoretical or rhetorical, the President speaks a language with which the Filipinos can identify themselves with. For the masses, he sounds cute and his jokes funny. He is an effective speaker despite the Visayan accent. The crowd laugh at his antics and no one dared yet heckle him while he speaks. That’s a Duterte’s magic.
Somehow, his promise of dismantling the Legislative Branch may come to pass although his promise to plant the Philippine flag in the South China Sea may not come true. Much more today, with the “Chinese territory” in our Exclusive Economic Zone.
The barangay posts to be declared vacant are another move towards control. His chosen barangay “leaders” shall be beholden to him, and if we understand the sociology of Filipinos, utang na loob never dies. One professor said, “Lingon tayo nang lingon, kaya nadadapa.” and if ever this happens, this shall ignore the Philippine Constitution and the Philippine Local Government Code. The General Supervision contemplated by the fathers of the Constitution and the Code does not mean total control for which the local populace shall be deprived of their right to choose their leaders.
On death penalty, why not prosecute those beautifully packaged dross of society? We yet have to see plunderers, rapists, murderers and perpetrators of heinous crimes executed. Execute the big fish first before the underlings and fingerlings.
Why the haste to change to Federalism? This may further divide the country and perpetuate those in power. Expect for the rise of more private armies, more vigilantes as it strengthens political dynasty. Why can’t we make haste slowly? (delsocorrodaquila@gmail.com/PN)
