ILOILO City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod passed an ordinance institutionalizing Friday of every week as “adolescent day” in all health centers.
During the “Adolescent-Friendly Clinic Day”, health centers will be addressing issues concerning the youth such as – but not limited to – teenage pregnancy, illegal drugs, health and sexual problems.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the initiative specific to youth will promote and protect their welfare.
“The ordinance aims to contribute to the reduction of adverse incidences related to adolescence by reason of their vulnerability to understand the consequences of their actions,” said Councilor Candice Magdalane Tupas, author of ordinance.
Of particular concern to Tupas are youngsters from 10 to 19 years old. She said suicide, accidents or injuries, sexual and reproductive problems, substance use and abuse, mental and nutritional issues and chronic diseases could overwhelm the youth.
The ordinance, however, does not limit adolescents’ access to all health centers on any other clinic days of the week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
They are still allowed to visit at their convenient time, clarified Tupas.
“The ordinance provides an avenue for adolescents facing certain issues to consult people trained to address their concerns. This can lessen their burden and eventually improve their well-being,” she said. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
