MANILA – Sen. Panfilo Lacson on Monday urged the military and police forces, including the public, to protect former President Benigno Aquino III and other personalities against unlawful arrest by the communist National Democratic Front (NDF).

The NDF, the group representing the communist movement in peace negotiations, on Sunday ordered the arrest of Aquino, North Cotabato governor Emmylou Talino-Mendoza, Kidapawan City mayor Joseph Evangelista, North Cotabato representative Nancy Catamco, as well as other military and police officials for “war crimes, crimes against humanity and other serious violations of international human rights law.”

This is in connection with the violent dispersal of protesting farmers in Kidapawan City in Cotabato province April last year that killed two victims and injured 34 others. They were demanding the free distribution of seedlings and sacks of rice.

“It is the responsibility of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police, as well as all law-abiding citizens of this country, to protect former president Aquino and all those placed under the liquidation list of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) who, by any definition, are enemies of the state,” Lacson said.

The court of law, he added, is the single authority that can mete out an appropriate punishment against anyone who violates the laws of the land.

“Anybody else is unauthorized and therefore illegal. Hence they should be made criminally liable if and when they perform such criminal act,” said the senator, who served as PNP chief under the Estrada administration.

The Malacañang, meanwhile, vowed to implement all necessary measures for the protection of Aquino and others who were ordered arrested by the NDF.

“Security measures are in place to guarantee the protection of the former President and other personalities mentioned by the announcement of the National Democratic Front,” said presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella.

Abella also reminded the CPP that “we have one government and one justice system in the Philippines” and that “only the appropriate body can rule on the issue of the violent dispersal of farmers in Kidapawan.”/PN
