ILOILO City – Seventy motor vehicles were apprehended across Iloilo province for various violations during a test operation of 46 policemen deputized by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to enforce traffic rules and regulations.

Of the 70 vehicles, 64 were motorcycles / tricycles while six were four-wheel vehicles, according to Senior Superintendent Harold Tuzon, provincial police director.

Their drivers’ violations were the following:

* no helmet

* overloading

* no / expired driver’s license

* noisy vehicle exhaust

* no seatbelt

* no signal light

* incomplete / lack of registration

* no plate number.

The test operation started on Monday. The 46 LTO-deputized policemen were spread out to Iloilo’s 42 towns and one component city. They issued to violators 112 Temporary Operator’s Permit (TOPs) and 130 citations tickets.

TOPs were for violations of Republic Act 4136 (Land Transportation and Traffic Code) while citation tickets were for violations of local traffic ordinances, explained Tuzon.

The deputized policemen can also conduct arrests, he stressed.

“This is just a test implementation of the law. In the coming days, expect more deputized police personnel to conduct road safety checks,” said Tuzon.

He hoped that the aggressive enforcement of Land Transportation and Traffic Code and local traffic ordinances will curb the number of fatal road accidents in Iloilo.

“We are pushing this deputation not only to promote road safety but also to help us in or anti-criminality campaign in the province,” Tuzon added.

He advised drivers to always be in possession of their driver’s licenses and vehicle documents to avoid inconvenience.

In 2016, the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) investigated 3,603 traffic-related incidents. A total of 146 individuals died.

Since January this year, it already recorded 296 traffic-related incidents and 14 deaths from these.

We are warning drivers. Observe the proper speed limit. Walang mawawala sa atin kung nag-iingat tayo sa pagmaneho,” said Tuzon.

Alarmed by the statistics on traffic accidents, the provincial government recently formed the Provincial Task Force on Road Safety.

Represented in the task force are the regional offices of LTO, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, Department of Public Works and Highways, the Iloilo Police Provincial Office, the Highway Patrol Group of the Philippine National Police, jeepney and taxi associations, and state colleges and universities./PN
