MANILA – Sen. Richard Gordon denied speculation that he is in the running for Senate leadership.
“That is not true. No way. I don’t want to be a Senate President. I don’t want the job,” said Gordon in a television interview on Wednesday.
The chairman of the Senate blue ribbon, and justice and human rights committees said he would rather concentrate on his duties as a senator and chief executive officer of the Philippine Red Cross.
“I don’t want to administer 23 senators. I am not interested. I’d rather be busy with the Senate and the Red Cross. I am not paid there and I am happy,” he added.
Meanwhile, Gordon assured that Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, an ally of President Rodrigo Duterte, still has the support of the majority of senators.
“Koko is still supported by the majority right now. In the Senate, you are just a temporary claimant of the office,” he said.
Why does he not want to be the next Senate president?
Gordon laughed as he quoted a speech by the late senator Neptali Gonzales Sr., who was Senate president from 1992 to 1992; from 1995 to 1998; and from January 1998 to June 1998.
“Never, never trust your fellow senators when you are Senate president. They will stab you in the back and you will not last long. You never know when they are going to take you out,” he concluded./PN
