MANILA – Global Football Club-Philippines scored a historic 3-2 victory over Malaysia’s Johor Darul Ta’zim in the group stage of 2017 AFC Cup on Wednesday night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
The victory was Global’s rebound win afrwe a 4-0 defeat to the three-time champion two weeks ago, moving up to solo first place in Group F with nine points on three wins and a loss.
A Philippine football team has not defeated a squad from Malaysia since an upset ax during the 1991 Southeast Asian Games.
Recently, the Philippine Azkals settled for a scoreless draw with Malaysia Harimau, while the Ceres-Negros Football Football Club was stunned by Malaysia’s Felda United in their own AFC Cup group stage tiff just last Tuesday.
Global switched to scoring mode early as Dennis Villanueva, Shu Sasaki and Amani Aguinaldo drained a goal each to surge the Philippine-based football team to a 3-0 lead at halftime.
The Johor Darul Ta’zim countered with its own rally in the second half as back-to-back goals by Gabriel Guerra reduced Global’s lead to 3-2. Global, however, tightened its defense down the stretch to escape with a win.
Global, which scored the upset win even without main guy Misagh Bahadoran, will plunge back to action on April 19 against Magwe at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon.
Global needs to top their group after the double-round eliminations for them to advance in the zonal semifinals and play against the Asia zone winner, with the winner moving up to the zonal finals./PN
