JORDAN, Guimaras – Manggahan Festival of this island-province is joining the “mother of all fiestas” to gain national exposure.

The Aliwan Fiesta in Metro Manila is from April 21 and 22 this year. This annual event gathers different cultural festivals across the country in Pasay City, thus its “mother of all fiestas” tag. Contingents compete in dance parade and float competitions.

The provincial government of Guimaras sees this national exposure very timely. It is busy preparing for this year’s Manggahan Festival set on May 11 to 21.

“Hubon Binagtong sa Manggahan” of Cabalagnan National High School in Nueva Valencia town will represent the island-province’s Manggahan Festival.

“After Guimaras won the Kasadyahan competition in the last Dinagyang Festival, the province and stakeholders decided to pool its resources to have the Manggahan Festival and the island-province represented in Aliwan,” said Jaypee Kein Entredicho, Guimaras public information officer.

The province is setting aside P5 million to support the needs of more than a hundred Aliwan delegation from Guimaras.

“The funds will come from the province, the Department of Tourism, Aliwan organizers, the local government unit of Nueva Valencia, with the support of the tribe sponsors,” said Entredicho.

“Hubon Binagtong sa Manggahan” was a major winner in the Dinagyang Kasadyahan just this January.

Aside from the championship crown, it bagged six of the minor awards.

Manggahan this year is “extra special,” said Entredicho. Unlike in previous year, the provincial government invited all festivals in Region 6 to perform in the “WV Invitational Cultural Presentation.”

To date, two festivals already confirmed participation – Dinagyang of Iloilo City and Pintados de Passi of Passi City.

The festival kicked off with a grand caravan on March 31, and the five-week Manggahan sa Kabanwahanan will be held until May 7.

From May 11 to 21, activities will all be held at the provincial capitol grounds in Barangay San Miguel here.

To promote Guimaras’ micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), “Patilaw sa Manggahan”, an exhibit of Guimaras products will be held at SM City Iloilo and Robinsons Iloilo.

Other activities include shoot fest, truck fest and 4×4 off-road challenge, Tour De Guimaras, motocross, mango eat-all-you-can, bike exhibit and kiddie fun ride, and Enduro National Championship Race.

This year’s theme is “Guimaras: Sadto. Subong. Kag sa Masanag nga Palaabuton.”

The province will also celebrate its 25th provincehood anniversary this year. (PNA)
