BACOLOD City – Two police officials were allegedly involved in illegal gambling activities in Negros Island Region.
Task Force Crusaders furnished the press copies of unsigned documents naming the officials as illegal gambling protectors.
National Deputy Commander John Chiong told reporters in a news conference the documents arrived in his mailbox yesterday.
Chiong said he will refer the matter to the Philippine National Police. Director General Ronald Dela Rosa may have the documents vetted, he said.
Panay News is withholding the names of the police officials mentioned in the documents pending further verification.
The list of police officers allegedly protecting illegal gambling came with a jai-alai tipster printed by Meridien Vista Gaming Corp. of Sitio Racal, Barangay Rapuli, Sta. Ana, Cagayan and titled “Helping Hands.”
Jai-alai is an illegal numbers game.
On the list, meanwhile, were the names “Jesus Clavecillas,” “Boy Agong,” “Bongbong Negro,” and “Tolikoy,” Chiong said.
“I will refer this to the office of Dela Rosa for him to order an independent investigation to determine the validity of the link of the two police officials named in the list as protectors of illegal gambling,” said Chiong.
The two police officials will be furnished copies of his letter to Dela Rosa, he added.
According to Chiong, the list suggests that illegal gambling remains rampant in Negros Island Region.
The Task Force Crusaders national deputy commander urged the local law enforcers to act on such reports. Police “should welcome this, as it informs them that illegal gambling [still exists],” he said.
“The President (Rodrigo Duterte) called for the eradication of illegal gambling and only the government-sanctioned Small Town Lottery will be recognized (as a legal numbers game in the countryside),” Chiong stressed.
Meanwhile the Police Regional Office 18 said the campaign against illegal gambling continues.
They have conducted 150 operations that resulted in the arrest of 280 suspects, confiscation of P54,186.05 in bet money and filing of 96 cases in court as of March 24, said Senior Inspector Armilyn Vargas, spokesperson.
Among the operations, Bacolod City Police Office conducted 31, arresting 111 suspects, seizing P7,088 in bet money and filing 31 cases.
Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office conducted 44 operations that led to the arrest of 81 suspects and the seizure of P15,150 in bet money. It has filed 26 cases.
Meanwhile Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office staged 75 anti-illegal gambling operations.
It arrested 88 suspects, seized P31,948.05 in bet money and filed 39 cases, Vargas said./PN
