ILOILO – Fifteen people were injured in a smashup of a pickup vehicle and two public utility jeepneys (PUJ) yesterday in Barangay Cabugao Sur, Santa Barbara town.
All the injured were taken to the Western Visayas Sanitarium in Santa Barbara. They sustained minor wounds, police said.
The white Ford Ranger was trying to overtake the blue PUJ plying the Iloilo-Santa Barbara route around 4 p.m., said Police Officer 2 Ryan Superficial.
“The Ford hit the rear side of the blue PUJ, and then crashed into the red PUJ (also plying the Iloilo-Santa Barbara route),” Superficial told Panay News, citing initial investigation. “This caused to red PUJ to turn upside down.”
Arturo Bachoco, 52, of Barangay Baluyan, Cabatuan, was driving the pickup.
Stephen Niembra, 29, of Guiguinto, Bulacan, and Dominador Mantiles, 48, of Barangay Amurao, Cabatuan, were steering the blue and red PUJs, respectively.
The three drivers were among the injured. Police have not yet identified the injured passengers as of this writing.
All three vehicles were headed to the poblacion of Santa Barbara, said Superficial.
A witness, 64-year-old Efren Agrabyador, said he was randomly taking a video in front of his house when the crash happened.
The Ford Ranger was speeding, Agrabyador told Panay News.
Bachoco may be charged with reckless imprudence resulting to multiple physical injuries and damage to property unless he and the victims have an amicable settlement, said Superficial.
The pickup driver turned himself in to the Santa Barbara police station. He said he is willing to settle with the victims.
It is unclear as of this writing if the other injured are pursuing charges./PN
