ILOILO City – From March 1 to 31, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Region 6 recorded 51 fire incidents in this city.
This figure was lower than the 78 fire incidents BFP recorded for the same month last year, according to City Fire Marshal Jerry Candido.
The dropped in cases indicated the effectiveness of BFP’s house-to-house fire safety campaign, he said.
The value of property damage also dramatically dropped – from P12 million March last year to only P700 thousand last month.
“While there were still fire incidences sa syudad, ang mga pumuluyo kabalo na gid sang ila himuon. In 90 percent the fire incidences we responded, pag-abot namon pumuluyo ang nagapatay sa kalayo,” said Candido.
The number of grassfire last month also dropped – from 41 last year to only nine this year.
Candido, however, said the public should not be complacent but instead continue to be vigilant.
BFP-6 kicked off the Fire Prevention Month observance last month with a March 1 “Walk for a Fire-free and a Fire-safe Nation” participated by firefighters, volunteers, public servants, non-government organizations, students, teachers and other professionals.
On March 2, there was a five-minute blowing of horns of all firefighting apparatuses of BFP stations.
There were also fire safety awareness campaigns in barangays, lectures and distribution of information materials on fire safety, and testing of fire hydrants.
Aside from the house-to-house fire safety information campaign, fire trucks also roamed in communities and, through public address system, broadcast fire safety reminders./PN
