BACOLOD City – A business leader believes Negros Island Region should connect its two provinces better first before linking to other regions in the Visayas.

“Connectivity” between Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental will encourage intra-island trading and expose far-flung villages to government services, said Frank Carbon, Regional Development Council (RDC) private sector representative.

Carbon, chairman of the RDC’s infrastructure development committee, was reacting to Presidential Assistant for Visayas Michael Lloyd Dino’s statement that his office is working on “One Visayas.”

Dino said the concept may be achieved by harmonizing infrastructure and socioeconomic developments in the island and strengthening the connectivity of RDCs in Regions 6, 7, 8, and 18.

“Let us first work on boosting the links between the two provinces of Negros,” said Carbon, regional governor for Negros and Western Visayas of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

His committee has been pushing for the development of additional road networks to boost interconnectivity within Negros.

On top of the two major road networks connecting Occidental and Oriental — Pontevedra-La Castellana-Canlaon City-Vallehermoso in the north and Kabankalan City-Mabinay in the south — the committee proposed six more in its transport master plan.

These are Binalbagan-Isabela-Guihulngan; Himamaylan City-Tayasan; Kabankalan City-Ayungon passing through Barangay Carol-an; Kabankalan City-Bayawan City; Vallehermoso-San Carlos City; and Canlaon City-San Carlos City.

Developing these road networks is part of a three-year rolling infrastructure program of the Public Works department. (PNA)
