BACOLOD City – Interior undersecretary Jesus V. Hinlo Jr. ordered the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) to look further into the fatal 2016 Christmas Day robbery of JDS Mindoro Enterprise Corp.

That the BCPO was able to identify the suspects but can no longer hold them accountable just because a witness died might make the officers “look bad,” Hinlo said during a recent City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) special meeting.

Two people died while three others were injured when an armed robber barged into the store on corner Locsin-Luzuriaga streets, Barangay 13 and fired at the people inside.

During the CPOC meeting, Hinlo asked Superintendent Noel Polines, chief of the BCPO’s Operations and Plans Unit, for an update on the case.

Robbery with homicide, murder and frustrated murder charges have been filed against two identified suspects and three John Does.

But Polines told Hinlo that the city prosecutor has ordered the dismissal of the case in light of the death of the “star witness.”

Senior Inspector Eugene Tolentino, Police Station 1 commander, said he received a copy of the dismissal order just this week.

Tolentino presumed the prosecutor dismissed the case believing that the sworn affidavit of Byron Baccaro has become hearsay now that the witness is dead.

Hinlo told Polines they should find means. Police know the suspect but they cannot do anything about it, “parang pangit,” he said.

Baccaro was shot to death on Jan. 4 in Barangay Granada.

Tolentino said they filed the charges against Jayson Sumalangcay of Barangay Granada, Marlon Famucol of Barangay Alijis and the John Does at the City Prosecutor’s Office on Jan. 17.

Chinese national Changle Wu, son of the storeowner, and security guard Jilbert Jilbert Mayang died during the robbery. Chinese nationals Wei Quang Huang, Yuan Long Huang and Zhang Xiao Dong were injured./PN
