MANILA – In a renewed commitment to fighting corruption, President Rodrigo Duterte vowed to purge the government of corruption.
Duterte made the statement during his recent meeting with the Filipino community in Doha, Qatar.
Apart from curbing corruption, the President also pledged to reduce crime and drug activity in the country.
“Ang sabi ko noong kampanya, I will give you a respite, makapaghinga lang naman tayo ng six years, wawalain ko ang corruption and I am starting it,” according to him.
Talking to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) gathered at the Lusail Sports Arena, Duterte said he fired Cabinet members over their alleged involvement in corruption. Nearly 100 government officials from different departments have also been sacked by the chief executive.
In the same speech, the former Davao City mayor also shared some remarkable reforms in his administration.
In efforts to protect the welfare of OFWs, Duterte said he prohibited the opening of suitcases and balikbayan boxes at the airports.
“So ‘yan ang patakbo ko pero sabi ko talaga. Kaya kung mauwi na kayo ngayon, either tomorrow or maybe during Christmas time, there’s gonna be a lot of arrivals there, wala na ‘yung bukas-bukas ng bag. Bawal na,” Duterte said.
“At kung buksan ‘yung bag ninyo, palagay ko hindi naman, you raise hell, create a scandal.”
The President also reported about the developments back home, telling that the Philippine economy is doing well./PN
