BACOLOD City – Mayor Evelio Leonardia has ambitious plans for the 21-kilometer New Bacolod Economic Highway.
Once completed, the thoroughfare could be made into the venue of what will be called the Bacolod Marathon, Leonardia said.
The construction of the P4.8-billion highway ceremonially started on Friday in Purok Progreso, Barangay Sum-ag.
A project of the Department of Public Works and Highways, the highway is expected to be completed in 2021, said Leah Jamero, assistant district engineer and public information officer of the Bacolod City District Engineering Office.
Leonardia said he is looking forward to the Bacolod Marathon as a key sports tourism event in the Philippines, at par with similar events in Boston (Massachusetts), New York, Chicago (Illinois), Tokyo, and London.
The Public Works department allocated P300 million for 10-month first phase, from April 17, 2017 to Feb. 17, 2018.
A portion of the amount, P164.799 million, will be spent for civil works, while the rest will be used to pay residents whose properties will be encroached by the construction of the road right-of-way.
IBC International Builders Corp. is the project contractor.
Meanwhile Rep. Greg Gasataya hopes the road project gets completed sooner, or within only three years.
Gasataya said the New Bacolod Economic Highway is one of the projects envisioned by Leonardia, a former congressman, he promised to continue.
“At this point in time, the plan of Leonardia is now a reality because the construction has commenced,” said Gasataya./PN
