ILOILO City – This city’s Dinagyang was declared the champion in the battle among the country’s colorful cultural festivals at the 2017 Aliwan Fiesta in Pasay City.
Manggahan Festival of Guimaras province placed second.
It was nearly 1 a.m. yesterday when Dinagyang was announced the winner. Tribu Salognon of Jaro National High School, the 2017 Dinagyang Festival ati tribes competition champion that represented the festival in the Aliwan, was awarded P1 million.
Tribu Salognon was well-applauded during the street dance competition, said Ramon Cua Locsin, chairperson of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, Inc. (IDFI)
The win augured well for Dinagyang Festival’s 50th anniversary on January 2018, said Locsin.
Tribu Salognon also represented Dinagyang in last year’s Aliwan as the 2016 champion of the festival. It placed second to the Manaragat Festival of Catbalogan City.
This year, Manaragat Festival placed third.
“Happy kita nga as we celebrate our 50th anniversary next year, naka-champion kita,” said Locsin.
He also said Dinagyang was invited to grace cultural events in South Korea and New Zealand this year.
A total of 13 festivals from across the country participated in this year’s Aliwan, dubbed as the “mother of all fiestas.”
Hubon Binagtong sa Manggahan of Cabalagnan National High School in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras represented Manggahan Festival in the Aliwan. It was the champion in the 2017 Kasadyahan competition of the Dinagyang Festival.
As the second placer, Manggahan Festival won half a million pesos.
Dinagyang, meanwhile, also won two special awards – best costume and best in musical accompaniment.
Tayo na sa Antipolo Maytime Festival of Antipolo City placed four while Meguyaya Festival of Upi, Maguindanao was fifth.
There were five runners up: Balitok Ti Alicia Festival of Alicia, Isabela; Panagbenga Flower Festival of Baguio City; Cinco de Noviembre Festival of Bago City, Negros Occidental; Timpuyog Festival of Kiamba, Saranggani; and Inaul Festival of Datu Piang, Maguindanao.
Baguio’s Panagbenga won the “best folkloric performance” special award.
Other festival participants were Padang-Padang Festival of Parang, Maguindanao; Banhayan Festival of Muntinlupa City; and Niyogyugan Festival of Dolores, Quezon./PN
