SAN JOSE, Antique – Para-athletes representing the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) hauled gold in athletics and swimming to finish at second place at the end of the 2017 Palarong Pambansa Para Games on Saturday.
The host team finished the competition with a total of 41 medals – 19 gold, 10 silver and 12 bronze medals – to finish behind overall Para Games champion Region IV-A Calabarzon with 24-5-9.
Swimmers John Rey Amolar (50-meter single above knee freestyle, back and breast stroke) and Edwin Villanueva (double below knee freestyle, back and breast stroke) had three golds each while Claire Calizo had two from the freestyle and backstroke events.
In athletics, Ronnie Samortin contributed two golds in the 100-meter 15 and below event before teaming up with Daniel Enderes, Angelo Sasa and John Yniego for the 4×100 relay gold. Samortin also claimed silver in the 400-meter ID event.
Similarly, Rose Almirante topped the 400-meter 15 and below girls before taking gold in the 4x 00 relay with Angelica Pasinag, Anna May Rico and Josephine Santillana, who also won the 15 and below long jump, clinched silver in the 200-meter ID and bronze in 100-meter ID.
Emilda Soriano also had two gold medals in athletics from the 200-meter ID 16 and above and the 4 x100 relay 16 and above with Merry Digan, Jerelyn Dela Cruz and Jade Cortel.
The other gold medalist WVRAA para-athletes are Rocky Polimar (100-meter 15 and below), Jhon Rey Casas, Ronilo Fabiana, Joshua Clemeno and Alden Jimenez (4×100 16 and above), Milady Villaruel (bocce singles) and Ivan Borayno and Jamby Ligual (bocce doubles).
Silver medalists are Pasinag (400-meter ID 15 and below girls), Christina Dela Cruz (100-meter VI girls T-12), Rodel Diaz (100-meter VI boys T-13), Daniel Enderes (long jump ID 15 and below) and Jerelyn Dela Cruz (16 and above long jump).
Bronze medalists are Carla Ramirez (50-meter breast stroke), Villaruel, Ligual, Ivan Jay Sarayno and Cornelio Serdena (bocce team), Larry Fanega (swimming), Daniel Enderes (200-meter ID), Pasinag (200-meter ID 15 and below), Quirebel Alicaya (100-meter VI girls T-11) and Kenneth Jacinto (400-meter ID 16 and above).
The Negros Island Region Athletic Association (NIRAA), on the other hand, is at ninth place in the medal tally with one gold, eight silver and five bronze medals. The lone gold was from Mariano Abarillo in swimming./PN
