ROXAS City – Farmworkers and militant group members took to the streets and called on President Rodrigo Duterte to make good on his promise to carry out genuine land reform and national industrialization.

Members of Kahublagan sang Mangunguma sa Capiz, Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap, Gabriela, and Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) Capiz gathered at the public plaza on Monday to observe the International Labor Day.

They also demanded the release of political prisoners and expressed support to the peace talks between the government and the rebels, which they believe is a step toward resolving poverty in the Philippines.

“Eleven months have passed (since Duterte took office), but this government has yet to prove true to [its] words,” said Kashmer Diestro, spokesperson for Bayan-Capiz. “We are urging them to implement genuine land reform to ease the people’s suffering.”

An indignation rally started at 1 p.m. Participants marched on main streets and gathered at the Roxas City Bandstand at 2 p.m. for a program.

They ended the event by burning an effigy named “Trumpogita” — a play with the words “Trump,” for United States President Donald Trump, and pugita, or octopus.

They said the effigy symbolizes “US imperialism, which dictates neoliberal economic system in the Philippines.”

More protests may be held in the next months if the government continues to fail to fulfill its promises, the militants warned./PN
