ROXAS City – Thirty-two fishermen have yet to get payment for their services during the first international triathlon in Capiz.
They were tasked to assist the triathletes, who swam two loops and clockwise in an inverted triangle for a total distance of 1.6 kilometers, and made sure markers are in place during TriAksyon, one of the highlights of the Capiztahan from April 21 to 22.
They were promised P800 per boat with two crew members.
“They came to me as they were expecting payment after the activity,” said Barangay Chairman Rey Magallanes of Baybay, where most of the fishers reside.
“But the event secretariat told us Sports Director Jose ‘Pepe’ Borres, who made arrangements with the fishers, went to Antique on April 24 for the Palarong Pambansa,” Magallanes said. “I also went to Carmen Andrade, and I was told capitol already released the payment.”
Andrade is a sports consultant for the provincial government.
Capitol released the payment for the fishers through the Halaran Chamber of Commerce, an organization of local businessman that partnered with the provincial government in hosting TriAksyon, Borres confirmed.
But the “members of the Halaran Chamber of Commerce attended a business conference in Davao and Metro Manila after the Capiztahan. The check requires their signature,” Borres told this reporter.
“I apologize for the delay,” Borres said, assuring that the fishers will get their payment after the long weekend, when “the signatories of the check are back from their business trip.”
Capiz hosted TriAksyon in a bid to become an ideal destination for triathlon and other sporting competitions.
A total of 327 local, national and international athletes gathered for the international triathlon.
The event also gave the province a chance to show it can be at par with other tourism destinations in the Philippines./PN
