BACOLOD City – Police in the city are incapable of monitoring cybercrimes, Senior Superintendent Jack Wanky admitted.
A Central Visayas-based cybercrime police unit led the entrapment of people allegedly engaged in cybersex in Barangay Handumanan last week.
Wanky said they will ask the higher police command to establish a cybercrime unit office here.
The May 5 operation was led by the Women and Children Protection Center – Visayas Field Unit 7 and the Bacolod City Police Office’s (BCPO) Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD), in coordination with the WCPD of the national headquarters.
Three minors were rescued, said Wanky.
The suspects — aged 20, 35 and 43 years old — were all detained at Police Station 10.
Police refused to disclose their names.
Criminal charges for cybersex, child abuse and trafficking in persons have been filed against them on May 6.
The operation followed the arrest of a man in the United States for engaging in cybersex using videos and photos of a minor residing in this city.
It was a “wakeup call” for the BCPO, which lacks capability in terms of anti-cybercrime operations, said Wanky.
He said they will cite the recent operation as basis for requesting, through the Police Regional Office 18, for a cybercrime unit from Camp Crame.
Western Visayas has its cybercrime unit, too, due to reported cybercrime cases in Iloilo and Boracay and Iloilo, said Wanky.
Cybercrime units were created only last year in areas where cybercrimes have been reported, he explained./PN
