AS THE team prepares for another basketball season, the Sta. Clarita International School Inc. is set to hold a three-day tryout from May 15 to 17 at its campus in Puerto Real, La Paz, Iloilo City.

Sta. Clarita head coach Rodel Camacho said that all aspiring Ilonggos and even players from other cities or provinces are welcome to join the open tryout as long as they were born from the year 2000 and up.

“We are inviting everyone to join our open tryouts since we are preparing for another basketball season,” said Camacho, who recently led the WVRAA secondary boys’ basketball team to a runner-up finish in the 2017 Palarong Pambansa.

Among the slots expected to be filled up during the three-day tryout is the position left by star forward Ryan Calama-an, who is set to move to the National University Bullpups in the UAAP.

Calama-an turned into an all-around player while under the helm of Camacho. The two have won multiple championships together with the last during the WVRAA meet that enabled them to represent the region in Palaro.

Set to return to Sta. Clarita this season are Ralph Bajon, Giann Paul Nahine, Marvin Cuerbo, King James Gaborno, Earl Mabaquiao, Bryan John Sajonia, Robert Begafria, and Wilmer Dalumpines.

After fulfilling her dream to win a gold medal recently in the 2017 Palarong Pambansa in San Jose, Antique, Filipina-American high jumper Alexie Mae Caimoso is next gunning for the Miss Universe crown.

The Leon, Iloilo-native Caimoso recently bagged the gold medal in the secondary girls’ high jump event where she defeated last year’s champion Cherry Mae Banatao of Cagayan Valley.

Aside from being an athlete, Caimoso is also active in beauty pageants as she was crowned the Mutya ng Buga 2013 and Miss Buga 2015, which gave her the chance to represent the municipality of Leon in the Miss Teen Iloilo last year.

“I am not only an athlete but also a beauty queen,” the Buga National High School standout said. “Just like high jumping, joining beauty pageants is also one of my favorite.”

“I know it is not easy to study, being an athlete and beauty queen all at the same time but I just need to have a time management,” she added. “I am doing this so that I can help my family.”

“It is every beauty queen’s dream to join the Miss Universe, so just like what I did here in Palaro when I improved my silver medal finish last year, I also want to represent the country someday in the Miss Universe,” said the 5-foot-8 athlete.

With her juggling act in athletics and beauty pageants, Caimoso is hoping that someday it will serve as a tool for her to find her father, whom she has yet to meet.

“With this, I hope, I will have a chance to know my father,” said Caimoso. “I have never seen my father since I was born. Every child wants to have a complete family and I hope I can complete mine soon.”/PN
