BACOLOD City – The Department of Tourism (DOT) is assisting Negros Occidental in crafting a stronger tourism development plan.
Around 50 tourism and planning officers attended an orientation-workshop on tourism planning guidebook for local government units at the Social Hall of the provincial capitol on Tuesday and Wednesday.
DOT central office initiated the activity in cooperation with the Western Visayas regional office and the provincial government.
Senior Tourism Operations Officer Ruth Tizon said their team imparted on local tourism officers the “essence and value of developing tourism as an industry.”
“Our role was to lead and guide them how to start and make a development plan,” Tizon said.
The National Tourism Development Plan 2016–2022 was being synchronized with plans of city, provincial and municipal tourism offices.
The national plan will guide tourism officers on how to contribute to sustainability and inclusive growth, said Tizon.
An assessment of Negros Occidental’s tourism development plan will allow the tourism officers to identify the best industry to develop, she said.
On the other hand, a situational analysis will help them find out what resources a particular area offers — sites, cuisines or cultural shows popular among tourists — she added.
Provincial Supervising Tourism Operations Officer Cristine Mansinares earlier said stakeholders plan to present the province’s new tourism products, including community-based rural tourism, culinary showcase, crafts, bird watching, and trekking. (PNA/PN)
