MANILA – Who between Rep.  Arthur Defensor Jr. of Iloilo’s 3rd District and Rep. Ferjenel Biron of Iloilo’s 4th District should run for governor in 2019?

Biron told Panay News that mayors in Iloilo province already reached a consensus on who to field in the next gubernatorial race.

Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. earlier said he and four Iloilo congressmen (Biron, Defensor Jr., Arcadio Gorriceta of the 2nd District, and Raul Tupas of the 5th District) agreed to field a common candidate for governor.

The candidate with the most number of votes from the congressmen and Iloilo mayors will run for governor’s office, said Biron.

Iloilo province has 43 mayors.

“As to the preference of the mayors, they have already made this known to all of us,” Biron told Panay News after attending the meeting of the Quality Affordable Medicines Oversight Committee at the Senate yesterday.

They gave Governor Defensor the privilege of making the announcement, added Biron, also a physician.

The Iloilo governor, according to him, is expected to announce the choice for governor “in the next few months.”

Asked if he was the preferred candidate, Biron said, “I really do not know.”

“I don’t want to really compare myself to Congressman Defensor. I know he is dynamic and a brilliant legislator so every one of us may merito naman. But let us leave it up to the mayors,” he said.

In 2013, Biron lost to Defensor Sr. in the gubernatorial contest by 83,541 votes./PN
