ILOILO City – The Sta. Clarita International School Primes claimed the top seed in the 2017 Iloilo City Invitational Basketball League (Mayor’s Cup – 1st Conference) after beating the CenterPhil Montessori Silver Knights, 81-77, on Thursday at the La Paz Plaza Gym.
John Sajonia led the way with 19 points for Primes, which tied the Silver Knights on top of the high school category standings with a 6-1 win-loss slate. The Primes, however, gained the No. 1 seat heading into the semis due to the win-over-the-other rule.
Meanwhile, Sun Yat Sen High School completed the semifinals casts after scoring an 81-61 domination over Iloilo National High School in their virtual knockout game. Vence Escamilla finished with 31 points for the No. 4 ranked Sun Yat Sen.
The one-game semifinals will be held this afternoon with the Primes taking on Sun Yat Sen at 2 p.m. and second-ranked Silver Knights facing the No. 3 St. Roberts International Academy at 3:30 p.m.
Primes head coach Rodel Camacho told Panay News that they will be preparing hard against Sun Yat Sen, the only team that defeated them in the elimination round.
“We cannot take them lightly even if they are the No. 4 seed team. Remember tinalo nila kami,” said Camacho. “Wala sa isip namin yung gaganti kasi tinalo nila kami. Ang mindset lang namin ay gusto naming manalo para makapasok sa finals.”
In the 40 and up category, the Iloilo PROS will be heading into the semifinals round with a twice-to-beat incentive after completing an elimination round sweep with a 93-86 win over the Iloilo Tuesday Club. Butchie Guzman finished with 13 points for the Iloilo PROS.
The 2017 Iloilo City Invitational Basketball Tournament, also known as the Mayors Cup-1st Conference, is organized by the Iloilo City government and presented by Flanax and Bonamine./PN
