Illegal fishers caught

BACOLOD City — Five fishermen in Sagay City were caught for encroaching the marine sanctuary there.

They were identified as Boy Mark Seronda, 27; Emelito Seronda, 24; Lito Sanita, 50; Bernardo Estelita, 44; and Leopoldo Leponario, 57, all of Purok Cotcoton in the island barangay of Molocaboc in Sagay.

Pet Cuenca, chair of Bantay Dagat in Barangay Himogaan, said they were patrolling on Friday when they spotted the suspects’ unmarked motor banca.

A hot pursuit ensued, which eventually led to the capsizing of the suspects’ boat.

Recovered from the fishermen were some 100 kilograms of assorted fish, a compressor, flashlights, and fishing paraphernalia.

Detained in Sagay City Jail, the suspects were facing charges for violation of the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998./PN
