MANILA – Jeffrey Christiaens scored the go-ahead goal as Ceres-Negros escaped with a 1-0 victory over Global-Cebu in the 2017 Philippine Football League yesterday at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
After failing to score in his first few touches, Christiaens finally put one on the board as he drained from a far post from a pass by Stephan Schrock in the 83rd minute.
The victory also put the Negros Occidental-based team in the win column after opening its campaign with a 1-1 draw with Kaya-Makati to move up to fifth place with 4 points.
Global, which swept the two championships in the United Football League last season, suffered its first defeat but was still on second place in the standings along with Kaya with 7 points.
Both Ceres-Negros and Global-Cebu struggled to score early despite numerous attempts, with goalkeepers Patrick Deyto of Global-Cebu and Ronald Muller of Ceres-Negros manning the target spots well.
