ILOILO City – A limestone quarry collapse in Barangay Sulangan, Dumangas, Iloilo. A backhoe operator and a truck driver were injured.
Driver Reygan Biñas, 36, of Barangay Poblacion, San Enrique, Iloilo was taken to the Iloilo Mission Hospital yesterday while backhoe operator Reymart Silvestre of Dingle, Iloilo was rushed to the district hospital in Dumangas.
The quarry collapsed around 3:30 p.m. Biñas was trapped in his truck. It took rescuers from the Bureau of Fire Protection of Dumangas and the municipal police station some 30 minutes to extricate him from the truck.
Biñas’ feet sustained cuts and bruises while Silvestre had minor injuries on his right arm, said Chief Inspector Rene Obregon of the Dumangas police station.
“Limestones started falling as the truck was loading some of the quarried materials,” said Bearly Sandoval who witnessed the collapse. She worked as checker in the quarry.
Mayor Ronaldo Golez identified the quarry permittee as Marry Ann Magbanua Pama. He said he will order an investigation.
“I’ll check if the area being quarried is within the area specified in the permit issued,” said Golez./PN
