ILOILO City – Sixteen months after he was released from prison, a convicted leader of a robbery group was again arrested, this time for illegal drug possession.

A sachet of shabu and a nine-inch knife were seized from 49-year-old Gil Pabriaga of Barangay Poblacion, Sara, Iloilo around 7 a.m. yesterday in Barangay Ortiz, City Proper.

Pabriaga was convicted for robbery in 1998 and was imprisoned for 18 years at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila. He was freed on Feb. 2, 2016 after serving his sentence.

Pabriaga apparently panicked when he saw a police patrol car in Barangay Ortiz and threw his knife away, said Chief Inspector Aldrin Lamera, Police Station 1 chief.

Cops saw what he did and became suspicious. They stopped to frisk him and recovered a sachet of shabu.

“Perhaps he was engaged in illegal drugs,” said Lamera.

Pabriaga was detained at Police Station 1.

Prior to his 1998 conviction, Pabriaga led the Black Liston robbery group operating in Iloilo city and province. He and companions used black shoelaces to restrain their victims’ hands and feet.

Pabriaga was arrested and subsequently charged and convicted following a 1998 robbery of a stall at Marymart Mall on Ledesma Street, City Proper. It involved some P100 thousand.

The robbery turned awry between Pabriaga and his two companions.

“Nagtinirohay kami sang akon tinawo kay indi nila paghatag sa akon ang ginkawat namon nga kwarta. Amo ‘to nadakpan ako,” said Pabriaga.

Chief Inspector Lamera said Pabriaga was also linked to the Braga robbery group that massacred nine persons, including a US Peace Corps volunteer, in Barangay Bacabac, Sara, Iloilo in August 1998./PN
