ILOILO City – Janiuay, Iloilo’s Mayor Jose “Jojo” De Paula was charged with attempted homicide and illegal gun possession yesterday at the Iloilo Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.
The police station of Maasin, Iloilo filed the complaint after barangay officials and tanods in Tubang, Maasin seized from De Paula a .9mm pistol late Saturday night.
De Paula’s gun went off, wounding 20-year-old Donald Robles of Barangay Naslo, Maasin at Villa Teresita Inland Resort.
“De Paula failed to present pertinent papers to support his ownership of the gun that’s why we charged him with violation of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act,” said Maasin police chief Senior Inspector Rey Cordero yesterday.
The documents that the Maasin police wanted the mayor to present was his gun license and a permit to carry firearm outside of residence.
As of this writing, De Paula was still under hospital arrest. He had himself confined at St. Paul’s Hospital Iloilo for cuts and bruises. A group of men mauled him after his gun went off around 11 p.m. on Saturday at Villa Teresita Inland Resort.
Minutes before the mauling, De Paula was barred for entering a function room at Villa Teresita Inland Resort where an association of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender was holding a program.
He was not an invited guest and organizers did not also realize that the person they turned away was the Janiuay mayor, said Cordero.
Denied entry, De Paula walked away and as he was heading toward his vehicle, a burst of gunfire was heard.
When the barangay officials realized the man being attacked was the mayor of Janiuay, they helped him to his vehicle, said Cordero. De Paula then left the resort./PN
