BACOLOD City – Councilors asked the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) to put up a plastic recycling plant in the city.
Huge volumes of non-biodegradable materials, including plastics, are dumped into the sanitary landfill in Barangay Felisa, the Sangguniang Panlungsod said in a resolution authored by Caesar Distrito.
Plastics endanger the ecology, according to Distrito, chairman of the urban development and general services committee.
“The environment should be protected at all costs for sustainable development and the promotion of health and sanitation,” he said.
Distrito observed that many houses and establishments in the city use plastics.
And the lack of waste segregation “contributes to the worsening situation of the dumpsite,” he said, referring to the poorly managed landfill.
“It is the duty of the state to promote the welfare of its constituents by enhancing their right to a healthful and balanced ecology,” Distrito said.
The BSWM may put up the plastic recycling plant with the help of Sen. Cynthia Villar, who also advocates environmental protection, said Distrito.
Villar was in this city recently to meet with several local government officials.
The BSWM, an agency under the Department of Agriculture, is responsible for advising and rendering assistance on matters relative to the utilization of soils and water as vital agricultural resources./PN
