ILOILO City – Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog welcomed the decision of the Guimaras provincial government to withdraw the complaint against the city government over the establishment of the Iloilo Ferry Terminal.
“All’s well that ends well. What is important is we help each other as partners for progress,” said Mabilog.
Presiding Judge Rosario Abigail Dris-Villanueva of the Regional Trial Court, Branch 65 signed on April 28, 2017 the motion of the province of Guimaras withdrawing Civil Case No. 15-0544 for Declaratory Relief and Injunction.
Mabilog believed the petitioners saw the advantages brought by ferry terminal.
“We are thankful to the province of Guimaras, especially to their government officials, Gov. Samuel Gumarin, Vice Gov. John Edward Gando, Provincial Board members and municipal mayors for withdrawing the case,” he said.
The city chief executive said the tourists’ impressions of terminal facilities will not only leave memorable experience but will also promote the place to more people.
“Officials of Guimaras appreciate that it is their people who will benefit from the ferry terminal. And for our part, seeing the promise of Guimaras as a tourist destination, we can bring our visitors to their province using the comfortable ferry terminal,” said Mabilog.
If visitors find it comfortable to go to Guimaras, they will return and this this will help grow the tourism of the region, he explained.
The ferry terminal is a joint venture of DoubleDragon Properties Corp. and the city government of Iloilo.
The provincial government of Guimaras sought legal action in 2016 contending, among others, that Guimarasnons were bypassed, thereby resulting to, among others, a steep terminal fee and the possible closure of the two existing wharves (Parola and Ortiz) serving people going to the island province.
Last year, the Sia family/Injap Group, principal shareholder in DoubleDragon Properties Corp., decided to adopt the ferry terminal and shoulder the terminal fee.
Subsequently, Mabilog sought out Gumarin so that the ferry terminal could finally operate.
This April, the ferry terminal held a two-day dry run. Normal operations followed.
