ILOILO City – A surprise drug test was conducted among officials and employees in the local government of Bingawan, Iloilo yesterday.
“I asked all the employees to gather in their respective offices,” said Mayor Mark Palabrica. “They were surprised when I told them to submit urine samples to the PDEA (Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency) personnel.”
Aside from Mayor Palabrica, Vice Mayor Matt Palabrica, Sangguniang Bayan members and 140 employees had taken the drug test administered by the PDEA Region 6.
The local government shouldered the expenses.
“Our town was declared drug-cleared last year,” said Mayor Palabrica. “We have to make sure our employees are also free from drugs.”
Those who will test positive will be dismissed from the service.
Bingawan has only 12 barangays. It had no drug-affected barangay last year, a validation that is part of Oplan Double Barrel showed.
Latest validation this year showed the 12 villages remain free from drugs, said Senior Inspector Ramil Jacaba, municipal police chief.
“We are only waiting confirmation from the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (for the drug-free declaration),” said Jacaba. “We have never monitored any drug user, pusher or protector.”/PN
