ILOILO City – Rice production in Aklan province dropped 5 percent but corn yield rose 11 percent, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
Aklan produced 101,471 metric tons (MT) of rice in 2016. The 2015 production reached 106,329 MT, a PSA news release showed.
The province’s 2016 output accounted for almost 7 percent of Western Visayas’ total production that year (1.4 million MT).
The yield-per-hectare of rice declined 6 percent, too — to 3.09 MT in 2016 from 3.28 MT in 2015 — the PSA data showed.
Of the total rice produced in 2016, 57 percent (57,935 MT) was from irrigated farmlands while 43 percent (43,536 MT) was from rain-fed farms.
On the contrary, corn production in Aklan increased to 2,688 MT in 2016 from 2,431 MT in 2015, and the yield-per-hectare also picked up 3 percent to 2.13 MT in 2016 from 2.07 MT the year before.
Aklan’s corn production in 2016 made up almost 2 percent of the region’s 154,000-MT output.
Yellow corn, generally used in making feed grains, had the highest production with 78 percent (2,090 MT), while white corn, which is grown for human consumption, composed 22 percent (598 MT).
Some 1,262 hectares were harvested for corn in 2016, up 8 percent from the 1,172 hectares in 2015, the PSA said.
These information were derived from the quarterly Palay and Corn Production Survey, which gathers data on rice and corn production, area and yield, and other production-related statistics, said Provincial Statistics Officer Antonet Catubuan. (With PSA-Aklan/PN)
