MANILA — Children’s playpens should undergo safety inspection at least once a year, according to Sen. Miriam Defensor–Santiago.
Senate Bill 2324, filed by Santiago, directs the Department of Health (DOH) to conduct mandatory inspection of all playpens in the country.
While such facilities attract children, they are “seldom cleaned,” said Santiago.
“Playpens can be seen in malls, restaurants and commercial centers,” she said. “In these facilities, children get to play with other children, with minimal supervision from their guardians.”
Under the bill, or the “Safe Public Playpens Act,” playpens found unsafe for public use will not be issued a certification.
The legislator from Iloilo City also reminded parents to “understand the concept of hygiene” when they take their children to playpens.
“Children who use these facilities should be protected from diseases brought by sick children,” said Santiago.
Section 4 of the bill directs the DOH and the Department of Interior and Local Government to establish a national information campaign that will educate playpen owners on safety and cleanliness./PN
